Pre-travel checklist

Apart from not forgetting to pack your favorite t-shirt and a spare pair of jeans, there are few things that need to be done before your departure. Especially if you're planning a longer trip (>3 weeks). I recommend checking them off of your list few days before The Day, in case something needs to be bought, ordered online or arranged.

Insurance

If you're traveling outside your home country, you probably need Travel insurance to cover your potential health expenses, stolen baggage or canceled flights. For my current trip I'm using BattleFace, but I have also considered UNION (for Slovak travelers). You can get insured by Ing or by bank providers like ABN AMRO. Photograph your baggage and its contents in case it gets stolen.

Medication

Check if you have all of your medication and refills for the length of your trip. When packing, include allergy tablets, altitude sickness meds, sore throat pills, spray against mosquitoes(depending on your destination), diarrhoea pills, probiotics and paracetamol.

Sim card

You can get an eSim to use data in most of the countries nowadays, but make sure to research your options to be able to use internet abroad. Also, if you're used to contacting your loved ones via Messenger or Whatsapp, look up if those apps are allowed and functioning in your destinations. In some countries, you might need to find alternatives (like WeChat in China).

Transport to/from airport

Check your transport to the airport and, after landing, transport to your first hotel. You might need to buy tickets for a bus or a train in advance.

Documents

Double check the documents required to enter your destination. Focus on visa requirements, vaccinations you might need. Check if your passport is valid for at least 6 months. Make a copy of your passport/ID. Print out flight tickets and bookings.

Money

Make sure to research payment methods in your destination. You might need to exchange money to different currency or set up bank accounts to get specific cards. In most countries in North/northwest Europe you would need Maestro/Mastercard/Visa. In central Europe and Southern Europe, you might need cash as cards are not accepted everywhere (but are still accepted in many places). In SE Asia, make sure to have some cash with you and a Visa card, which should be accepted at most tourist places.

Travel Itinerary

Write down flight dates and times, names of hotels that you'll be staying in and trains that you plan to take. If you haven't planned your travels in such a detail, write down cities and areas that you want to visit and a general idea of your adventures. Include a contact of your travel partner. Make sure to share this with your family or friends, so in case something happens, people would know where to find you.
